Our Legacy

A short history of Post 31 in Tuscumbia.

Post 31 has been part of life in Tuscumbia and Colbert County for generations. The notes below are drawn from regional tourism guides and public reporting — items marked for confirmation will be expanded as the Post supplies primary records.

The M60A3 tank at Spring Park

Regional tourism material describes the M60A3 tank on display at Tuscumbia's Spring Park as having been obtained by Post 31 from Fort Rucker on April 28, 1999 — a familiar landmark for visitors and local families alike. The Post is best positioned to confirm the acquisition story and any restoration history.

The Circle of Valor

The courthouse lawn in Tuscumbia is known to many as the Circle of Valor — a memorial space honoring those who served in conflicts across U.S. history. It is the site of Post 31's annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs.

One of Alabama's long-running Memorial Day observances

Regional guides describe Tuscumbia's Memorial Day program as one of the older Memorial Day observances in Alabama. The Post is gathering primary records to confirm the founding year and full lineage.

Color Guard and military honors

For many years the Post 31 Color Guard has rendered military funeral honors for families across the Shoals — work that continues today under longtime members and volunteers, in cooperation with local funeral homes.

If you or your family have records, photographs or stories that belong in Post 31's history, the Post would welcome hearing from you. Reach out through the Post's Facebook group or by mail.
